It’s 06:45 and I’m leaving the house, getting in the car and driving to the gym. Now, I do visit the gym every weekday morning but not usually quite this early.

Today marks another big step on my fitness journey… attending my first ever gym class.

When I joined JD Gym back in September I said to Coach Ken… “I don’t think I’ll do any of the classes”. I didn’t think they were “my thing”. I didn’t expect to enjoy gym life quite as much as I do.

Matty the PT, on the other hand, has been suggesting that I should join one or two of his classes for quite a few weeks.

So at 07:00am I joined the JD Burn class, led by my personal trainer, Matty.

JD Burn is a 35 minute HIIT (high intensity interval training) and strength boot camp style class. 40 seconds of maximum performance, 20 seconds rest. Repeated 3 times before moving onto the next station for another 3 sets. Starting at one end of the studio and finishing at the other.

  1. SkiERG
  2. Dumbbell Fly
  3. Dumbbell Shoulder Press
  4. Bicep Curls
  5. Situps/Crunches
  6. Weighted Step Up
  7. Medicine Ball Slam
  8. Wall Sit

And with that, my first gym class was over.

I took a few minutes out, changed my gym top and then headed straight to my favourite treadmill for a solid 60 minutes. Topped off with a visit to the sauna. My new Friday early morning routine.
